Per newly revealed information from Embark Studios, Arc Raiders appears to utilize artificial intelligence technology for generating select dialogue. This revelation is strikingly similar to the issue that surrounded the developer's 2023 hit, The Finals.
Launched on the last day of October for Sony's console, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, Arc Raiders is positioned as a more accessible on-ramp to the extraction shooter genre. Compared to established behemoths like Escape from Tarkov, it strives to offer a more approachable gameplay. The title has generally earned favorable reviews, maintaining a "very positive" score on digital distribution based on thousands of user evaluations.
Within the product's store listing, a clear disclosure regarding artificially created material draws comparisons: "During development, we may employ automated and generative technologies to assist with content creation. Regardless of method, the final output embodies the artistic expression of our creative personnel."
The Finals, a popular competitive FPS recognized for its smooth gunplay and dynamic battlefields, faced criticism for its use of AI prior to its full release. Throughout its October 2023 open beta, the title's sound specialist disclosed in a online discussion that the company had leveraged artificial intelligence systems for developing dialogue lines. This statement generated instant criticism from professional performers and industry professionals, who argued that AI-generated voices were of inferior standard compared to human performances and that such approaches could eliminate acting roles.
Addressing concerns, the company clarified that they had contracted experienced voice actors to produce primary dialogue for The Finals, but expanded these with text-to-speech tools to generate additional material inspired by those original recordings. The developer's reasoning focused on the significant time savings gained from this technique.
Regarding Arc Raiders, the title's creative lead commented that the title avoids utilizing artificial intelligence creation in any form," though he avoided specifics on the precise meaning of the platform statement. He did acknowledge, however, that the identical voice system implemented in The Finals was also utilized in Arc Raiders.
We employ a mix of recorded voice audio and material produced using text-to-speech technology in our releases, based on the context," explained a studio representative. "Sometimes, filming actual interactions where performers collaborate — allowing actor relationships and tension to define the final product — is something that adds depth to our game worlds that systems cannot duplicate. In other instances, notably when it relates to real-time combat communications, text-to-speech enables us to have customized dialogue where we otherwise wouldn't for example due to development pace."
Early feedback to the implementation of automated systems in Arc Raiders has been relatively mixed, especially during the early days. A portion of the community have voiced significant concerns.
That said, different gamers have taken a more open-minded stance.
The ongoing discussion surrounding artificial intelligence use in game development appears set to endure as developers juggle production speed with artistic integrity and ethical considerations.
