Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
