In the course of several weeks, the US president started showing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – truly, no other president would have conceived – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.

As disorienting as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept regarding democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group within America may possess limited understanding of him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of a powerful ruler arising; instead, a baby is born to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to escape secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his message concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to present the additional cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your coat you must offer the person your additional clothing too.
The evident and clear reality that the Savior from scripture requests a kind of profound affection concentrated on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Best of Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the determined opposition to Trump arise during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners at every demonstration and appeals to the best parts within national heritage.

America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the finest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by reference to that which renders it special and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus.
