United Nations Ends Sanctions on Syria's Leader Before Presidential Visit

The UN Security Council gave the green light to a US resolution to lift sanctions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his White House visit the coming week.

He was appointed transitional president following his leadership in a rebel offensive that removed the previous leader in winter 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of domestic strife.

The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a different period" since Assad was deposed.

He had been subject to global penalties while commanding the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with the terrorist network. The US removed HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations in July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks toward America and supportive states for their support the country and its population."

Imminent Washington Talks

President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday occurs subsequent to US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.

The pair met initially this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip on a tour of Arab nations.

After that meeting, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".

The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria before he cut connections during 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit will not be Sharaa's first trip to America during this period. In September, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to speak before the United Nations gathering in New York after approximately sixty years.

During his address, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position across international circles" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
