Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they added.
Officers then located multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.
City officials announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism left him stunned and had to be resolved promptly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
